The images below were taken during an April 2010 nature walk led by Jim Smith at the Abrams Creek Wetlands Preserve. Jim has been leading walks at Abrams Creek for years, both in the spring and fall, educating participants on the variety of flora and fauna to be found living within this undeveloped strip of land in the heart of the City of Winchester. The Wetlands is a protected natural area that is open to the public and is part of the planned Winchester City Green Circle.
The Preserve features paved walking trails, benches for resting and observing wildlife, wetlands, and pasture and open creek/pond areas that attract a wide variety of plant and animal species. It is a refuge for migrating and year-round bird species. The erection of informational signs along the trail is planned for the near future, featuring photographs from local photographers of several key species that frequent this natural habitat. When visiting the Preserve, we ask that you please be respectful of the wildlife, stay on the path, and use the provided receptacles for your trash. Dates for Jim's nature walks are listed in our main events section and in our newsletter.
