 2012-2014 NSVAS Board of Directors

President:  Lee Bowen

Bio:  Lee has lived in Front Royal since 1972, working as a Chemical Engineer and Manager at Avtex Fibers, Chemstone Corp, and Ramsey Hardware.  He is currently a co-leader for the Andy Guest State Park Bluebird Trail and on the Board for NSVAS, and a past Vice President and President of the NSVAS.  He is active in the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club as a Trail Maintainer and in the Sierra Club as a National Outings Leader.

Lee states:  “I will give direction and motivation to the current volunteers who will keep this organization active, and train them to undertake the leadership positions.”

First Vice-President:  George “Eric” Williams

Bio:  Eric has been an active birder his whole life. He enjoys identifying birds and carving decoys. Since 2003 he has been a member of the Bluebird Trail program at Blandy Experimental Farm. He also participates in the annual Christmas Bird Count, the MAPS program at Blandy, Glen Dobbing, and the Van-Lennep Foundation.

Eric states:  “Please consider me for the office of Vice President of NSVAS.  If selected I will serve to the best of my ability. Thank you.”

Secretary:  Jeannie Senter

Bio:  Jeannie currently serves as Secretary for the Northern Shenandoah Valley Audubon Society for the  2010-2012 term and has previously served in several positions on the Millbrook High School Band Booster Association Board for five years. She currently works for FEMA with the federal government in Winchester and has been a resident of Winchester/Frederick County for the last 23 years. She was born and raised in California. She has been a member of the Bluebird Trail program at Blandy for the last five years and has always loved birds. She has two cockatiels.

Jeannie states:  “I look forward to serving again as Secretary of NSVAS and commits to contributing to the continuation of this organization.”

Treasurer:  John Hachtel

Bio:  John currently works as the chief communications officer at Shenandoah University and has spent his career in communications and marketing for higher education. He is a member of the National Audubon Society, follows the NAS through social media, and has participated in the Christmas Bird Count. He is also a regular contributor to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He was born and raised in New York City and has lived in a number of places on the East Coast which has allowed him to explore varied habitats and enjoy multiple outdoor recreations.

John states:  “By serving on the board, I hope to be a good steward of the resources of the chapter and be a strong proponent of its continued service to the people of the Northern Shenandoah Valley. I am alarmed by the possibility of a cessation of the activities of the chapter, and want to provide my time, talent, and resources to ensure the survival of the group. I look forward to working with a vibrant and robust organization of people dedicated to the Audubon mission. The concept of "citizen scientists" is in danger of being lost if there is no local group to reach out to prospective members. We all do better things when we work collectively, share ideas, and mutually celebrate success.”

Newsletter Editor:  Tracey Svitek

Bio:  Tracey currently works at the premier printer company of ColorCraft of Virginia for the past eight years and is very familiar with printing and mailing processes.  She has a degree in Graphic Communications and also has DTP experience.  She and her husband volunteer with the Bluebird Trails at Blandy Experimental Farm and Sky Meadows State Park and she also is a member of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and the North American Bluebird Society.

Tracey states: “I am also a very eco-minded individual with a strong love for nature. I am an avid bird watcher and have been a constructor and “landlord” of birdhouses since 1994.”  She looks forward to “channeling my passion for birds into the design and production of your newsletter.”
